Xavier Nady

th the heart of the Yankee order up, which included A-Rod and the recently-acquired and hot-hitting Xavier Nady, Gardenhire took no chances. Nathan completed the shutout.

And tonight, the Twins took the Yankees into extra innings. Interesting ball club, those Twins. No real 'names,' unless you count the Home Run Derby winning Justin Morneau, and yet, there they are, dancing around the top of the American League Central with the White Sox. The Twins are a team to watch as playoffs approach. Pitcher Glenn Perkins' shutout of the Yankees put him at 9-3 on the season, with a somewhat less than impressive ERA of 4.07, but if memory serves, all but about 5 of the 27 outs were ground ball outs.

of weeks; most of the hitters have been outstanding and most of the pitchers have been awful.  Xavier Nady has a .365 batting average, five home runs and 13 RBI in 15 games since joining the Yankees.  Jason Bay is hitting .333 with eight RBI and 11 runs scored in nine games with the Red Sox, and Manny has been tearing it up in Los Angeles, hitting .475 with four homers and 13 RBI in 10 games in Dodger blue.  On the other hand, Damaso Marte is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA for the Yankees, and Kyle Farnsworth has an 8.31 ERA and has given up three homers in 4.1 innings for the Tigers.  Livan Hernandez gave up nine runs in 2.2 innings for Colorado on Sunday, after the Rockies acquired him from the Twins in a waiver deal.

cuff tendinitis.

Jeff Karstens, who came over from the Yankees in the deal for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, pitched a complete game shut-out against the Diamondbacks, allowing just two hits in a 2-0 win.  Karstens, who was 3-5 with a 5.65 ERA in 15 games with the Yankees in 2006 and 2007, is now 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 15 innings over two starts with the Pirates since the trade.  On the other hand, Marte is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA with the Yankees.

ar.  For example, Pittsburgh at first was reported to be seeking a king's ransom in return for Xavier Nady, but then ultimately gave him up, along with Damaso Marte, for very little in return.  Before the Mets consider different trade scenarios, they need to establish a plan for what they are willing to give up, and what they would need to receive in return for those players.

still need to make a move for an established everyday player to fill one of those roles.  With Xavier Nady off the board it is unlikely the Pirates will be keen on trading Jason Bay, and Casey Blake, who the Mets were reportedly targeting, has been traded to the Dodgers.  The Mets were rumored to have been in contact with the Padres regarding Brian Giles.  Aside from his .300 batting average and .400 on-base percentage, his relatively worthwhile $9 million contract for next year makes him an attractive option.   The other outfielder the Mets seem to be targeting at this point is Raul Ibanez, but his price tag is too high at the moment, and New York has indicated that they would not be willing to trade their two best prospects, outfielder Fernando Martinez and pitcher Jonathan Niese.

' slugger.

Many fans and commentators have entertained the idea of trading for Xavier Nady, the outfielder the Mets traded to the Pirates for Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez in 2006.  While Nady's powerful right-handed bat and ability to play first base make him a perfect solution to the Mets' needs, I think many Mets fans tend to underestimate the Pirates' affinity for him.  Although Pittsburgh has not made the playoffs since the Barry Bonds era, their organization is not simply a well of talent from which big-market contending teams can pick and choose players to acquire (despite how that may sometimes seem to be the case).
