Immediately we can eliminate Lackey, because the Mets will be outbid on the open market. The organization is in bad shape financially because of Bernie Madoff, and the Wilpons aren't in a position to go on a multi-million dollar shopping spree.

(1) Ben Sheets, (2) Oliver Perez, (3) Jon Garland, (4) Andy Pettitte, and (5) Randy Wolf
Sheets is unquestionably the best pitcher of the group, but his injury history is immensely discouraging. Even though he's the top gun remaining, I wouldn't touch him if I were the Mets. He'll get hurt and either Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell will be in the rotation before we know it. Can't have one of them on top of Maine and Redding.

All teams have lots of injuries. That's just part of the game. It's how teams play through those injuries, and how the back-up players fill in that determines the success of a team over the marathon of a 162-game season. The following players have been hurt and have had to miss time at some point this season: Moises Alou, Ryan Church, Luis Castillo, Pedro Martinez, Marlon Anderson, John Maine, Billy Wagner, Duaner Sanchez, Brian Schneider, Ramon Castro, Damion Easley, Claudio Vargas, Endy Chavez, Angel Pagan, Trot Nixon, Tony Armas, and Matt Wise. But the Mets are in first place now, in large part due to contributions from the likes of Fernando Tatis, Argenis Reyes, Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans, Robinson Cancel, and the core of players who have remained healthy. Excuses don't win games, but a solid bench does.

Around The League
Amidst rumors that he might be dealt to a contender, Randy Wolf was traded to the Houston Astros earlier today. This comes as a surprise, as a variety of teams such as the Phillies, Yankees and Dodgers, had been rumored to be interested. Houston is 10 games out of a playoff spot, so it does not seem realistic that they should be on the buyer side of the trade deadline market. In addition, Wolf's numbers this season are markedly better within the acreage of PetCo Park, so a shift to the hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park does not bode well for his performance.
