Monday Morning Moneyball: Week 2- Big Apple Stars Are Born!

Welcome to Monday Morning Moneyball! Week 2 provided us with two New York tales of triumph that not only bucked old trends, but also may have unveiled the dawn of a new quarterback era in green and wide receiver tandem in blue. We start with the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS! All week, media outlets all over the country have been replaying Rex Ryan’s message to the Jets season ticket holders. 70 seconds of fanfare and propaganda from Ryan begged for support over and beyond the norm from the Jets faithful, and his message was reiterated by Kerry Rhodes and several other Jets players, and the message was simple: We can beat the Patriots. That they did, 16-9, showing off their Baltimore style dominant defense that Ryan has brought over from the Raven dynasty. While I’ll delve into New England’s deficiencies in my Money Bites below, praise needs to be given to Mark Sanchez for his 2nd consecutive strong performance. While his numbers weren’t gaudy (14 of 22, 163 yards with 1 TD, 0 Int), his 101.1 passer rating is indicative of his efficient performance. Sanchez did everything Ryan and the Jets could ask of him in his rookie season. He stayed away from risky unnecessary throws, threw for a 65% completion percentage in the second half and executed on big plays down the stretch, including the go-ahead touchdown strike to Dustin Keller. Watch out young QB society, Tom Brady, and everyone else in the AFC, if Sanchez keeps up this act, the Jets will be a team to be reckoned with come January.

It will be the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants in the Super Bowl, and Eli Manning will tie up the ring race with fellow draftee Ben Rothlisberger 27-24 in a classic. Let these facts guide you toward a season of virtue and grunting, and remember, you still must wear a suit and tie to work on Monday- leave the big Flinstones club and leopard garb at home.

(The Plaxico Burress Story.)

The New York Football Giants went 11-1 today in a convincing win against the Washington Redskins. The Giants won the division showdown without star receiver Plaxico Burress as he was home recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the thigh.

It’s been a weird year, especially for sports. The Boston Celtics finally picked themselves up from the bootstraps to win a championship. Neither the Red Sox nor the Yankees amounted to anything more than a bunch of overpaid whiners. They are even tearing down Yankee Stadium.

With the MLB playoffs set to begin, there is a subtle difference in the air compared to start of any other postseason. In the NHL, fans can potentially look forward to a great Canadians/Bruins series that is not only exciting, but has a historical kick to it. Likewise basketball fans always have the chance to see if the Suns can finally get past the Spurs and football fans love seeing the rivalry of the Eagles Vs the City of Philadelphia when the Eagles so much as get tackled for a loss.

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning it looked like the Mets would leave Philadelphia last night with their collective tail between their legs.  Brad Lidge, who still hasn't blown a save all season, was warming up in the Phillies' pen, and the New York offense had only mustered two runs and 12 hits in the previous 16.2 innings, going back to the fifth inning of Tuesday's game.  But Carlos Delgado, who had homered in the sixth to cut Philly's lead to 3-2, sliced a liner over the left field fence to tie the game at three and spark the Mets's offense.  Carlos Beltran followed with an infield hit, and stole second.  With first base open, Brad Lidge walked Ryan Church intentionally, but Daniel Murphy made him pay, doubling down the right field line to bring home Beltran with the go-ahead run.  The hit parade continued with Brian Schneider's flare to left, which put the icing on the cake.  New York's four-run eighth inning clinched a two-game split in Philadelphia, and catapulted the Mets back into first place by a half game.

Despite the success of the first World Series, no such event took place in 1904.  New York Giants owner John Brush and manager John McGraw had opposed the merger between the two leagues even in 1903, and upon winning the National League pennant in '04, refused to participate in the postseason.  Backlash from the fans, the media, and the players, who sought their bonuses, was negative and plentiful, so in time for the 1905 season the two sides agreed to a formal establishment of a championship series between the pennant winners from the two leagues.  And since the

rress, who you may recall, caught the game winning touchdown in the superbowl this year to help the New York Giants be victorious over the New England Patriots. As you also may recall, he has been battling an ankle injury for quite some time.  In the post season he was also struggling with a sore knee.

I have to admit there was time during the 2007 New York Giants season that I thought Eli Manning was not going to be the Giants quarterback much longer.  After his horrendous performance against the Minnesota Vikings in week 14 when he threw 3 interceptions which were returned for touchdowns, the future for Eli Manning in New York looked bleak.  The fans were booing and and radio call in shows were calling for his head.  The following week against the Chicago Bears he started off slow again and almost threw another interception in the end zone.  It was at this time that I thought maybe it would be best for Eli to leave town.  But he managed to rally the team in the 4th quarter and the Ciants prevailed.  Even so Eli was still on shaky ground.

What a win last night by Big Blue, a complete team effort.  The defense was phenomenal, the offense was solid and the Giants did what no one thought they could.  I will admit I thought the Giants would hang tough and give the Patriots a run for the money, and in the end the Patriots would find a way to win, as they always do.  I really expected this game to be like the last game of the season.  But as the game went on, the Giants just competely outplayed them.  They were the better team last night.  Once Eli Manning completed the pass to David Tyree, I knew destiny was on our side.

I have never claimed to be an expert when it comes to predicting outcomes of football games, although last year I nearly predicted the exact final score of the Super Bowl while hitting on seven of my nine prop bets. (My prediction was 26-17, the final was 29-17.) For whatever reason I had a very good feel for that game. This year's Super Bowl, however, remains a mystery to me. Part of the reason I am having trouble getting a good feel for this game is that I am a bitter Jets fan and I can't stand either team. I'm finding it difficult to put my personal feelings aside and look at the game objectively. I think right now I am as close to objectivity as I am going to get, and with that being said, here is my official Super Bowl XLII prediction.
