suyoshi Shinjo, Desi Relaford, Darren Bragg, Matt Lawton, Roger Cedeno, Roberto Alomar, Esix Snead, Marcos Scutaro, Jeff Duncan, Matt Watson, Kaz Matsui, Eric Valent, Gerald Williams, Danny Garcia, Jeff Keppinger and Mike Cameron at the top of the order.  That’s 27 different leadoff hitters (other than Reyes) in four and a half seasons.  Since Reyes assumed the role in ’05, he’s spent just 12 games in the lineup but out of the leadoff spot, and the Mets have used only 10 different leadoff hitters aside from Reyes in the last four years.

and might be willing to give Argenis Reyes a shot to compete against John McDonald, Aaron Hill and Marcos Scutaro for playing time if they trade David Eckstein as has been rumored.

Of that list, Giles seems to be the best fit, but I'm not sure what New York would have to give up to get him.  I do not want to trade Endy Chavez, and I do not want to cripple the bullpen by trading Aaron Heilman, Joe Smith, Duaner Sanchez or Pedro Feliciano.  Scott Schoenweis is expendable but probably does not have much value, as is the case with most other Mets players outside their untradeable core, and that will be Omar Minaya's main obstacle in getting an outfield bat before the trading deadline.

the DL with a concussion, Gaston could have gone the safe veteran route, playing David Eckstein and Marcos Scutaro up the middle.

In Seattle’s short-term outlook, where managers are apparently instructed to play the guy with the highest paychecks and not the best numbers, Eckstein (signed in the offseason to a one-year, $4.5M deal) would be the starting shortstop. Scutaro, a utilityman making $1.55M this year, would be behind him.
