To add to yesterday's post, neither Ibanez nor Washburn was dealt after they were claimed on waivers. According to the Post-Intelligencer, the Twins put in claims on both, and their waiver number was higher for Jarrod, while the Tigers claim was highest for Ibanez.

But that's the way the cookie crumbles for Lee Pelekoudas, especially when the crumbly cookie was handed to him by Bill Bavasi. He needs to balance the desire to simply shed Washburn with whatever he might get in return (reportedly, the earlier deal with the Yanks fell through because the Ms insisted Vidro be included in the package--Vidro has, of course, since been DFAed). And if he can get a good price for Ibanez, that's great, and Pelekoudas should be more motivated to deal Raul, in the light of his expiring contract.

Bravo to Lee Pelekoudas for having the cojones that Bavasi lacked. He's cleaning up another guy's mist

3) Shannon Stewart, LF, Toronto Blue Jays: Although Stewart is the most lackluster name on this list, he will probably be the easiest for the Mets to get. The 34-year-old no longer has the speed to steal bases the way he did when he averaged 33 from 1998-2001 but he stole 11 last year and still hits for average and gets on base at a decent rate. He could fill the number two spot in the Mets batting order and plays above average outfield defense, and could platoon with Chavez in either corner position if Alou or Church are in the lineup. The Jays are unhappy with their middle infield situation and might be willing to give Argenis Reyes a shot to compete against John McDonald, Aaron Hill and Marcos Scutaro for playing time if they trade David Eckstein as has been rumored.

I'm going to deliberately provoke the ire of my easily ire-provokable friend/reader Drano by using horse racing once again as a blog segue (blogue? Have I created a word here?) For those who aren't privy to our emails--which is anyone outside of the NSA, I suppose--Drano doesn't like that I've mentioned a failed Triple Crown in horse racing while utterly failing to mention the victory of his team in the exciting Stanley Cup that happened a few weeks back. His team . . . the Stanley Cup . . . darned if I can't remember the name of his team or the sport he follows so avidly . . . but anyway, on to horse racing and baseball . . .
