Fernando Martinez

As a result, the team called up their prized prospect Fernando Martinez and debuted him tonight against the Washington Nationals. After hearing about this kid for years I've got to say his firs

nwilling to part with their top pitching prospect, Jon Niese, or or their prized outfield prospect, Fernando Martinez.  It is silly to announce these types of restrictions because there are always circumstances in which it makes sense to trade a top prospect.  How often do teams have realistic opportunities to go deep in the playoffs?  Not very.  Since 2000, 12 different teams have played in the World Series, and no team has repeated as World Champion in back-to-back years.  Only the Red Sox have won multiple titles in the last eight years, and they had a season in which they missed the playoffs in between.  The point is, if a team has a legitimate chance at winning a World Series, trading a prospect might be worthwhile.  Although it is prudent to try not to bankrupt the farm system for the future, teams should try to win one championship before they worry about creating dynasties.

New York has indicated that they would not be willing to trade their two best prospects, outfielder Fernando Martinez and pitcher Jonathan Niese.

Around The League

What was Pittsburgh thinking giving up Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte for the package of mediocre minor leaguers they got in return?  Although earlier in the week the Pirates were rumored to be asking for an arm and a leg for either Nady, Marte or Jason Bay, they wound up dealing two of their prime trade targets for a torn labrum and a fractured patella.  Ross Ohlendorf and Jeff Karstens, who were pitching in Triple-A, have some major league experience but neither projects to be much more than an average player at the major league level.  Jose Tabata was a prized outfield prospect but he has been struggling at Double-A.  Dan McCutchen could be the sleeper in this trade as he is a combined 22-13 in the minor leagues, and currently has a 3.58 ERA at Triple-A.  From the Yankees' perspective, this trade is excellent.  Without cleaning out their wealth of minor league talent, they filled two glaring holes with very capable major league players.  They may not be done yet either, as Brian Cashman has been reported to be in contact with the Mariners about Jarrod Washburn.  Even if Cashman can't land a starter before the trade deadline, this steal from the Pirates may have already sewn up his contract extension as GM.

p; If that is the case, they will likely demand a big-time package of young, talented players (i.e. Fernando Martinez and/or Mike Carp) in return for him in a trade.  Is it possible that Nady is moved before the deadline?  Sure, it is, but probably for a higher price than the Mets are willing to pay.  For that reason, Raul Ibanez is probably a better trade target for Omar Minaya, because the Mariners will be more willing to part with the 36-year-old outfielder for a lesser cost.

the dearth of talent at the top of the Mets' minor league system and injuries to blue chip prospect Fernando Martinez, Omar Minaya will probably need to explore the trade market for an outfield bat.  Before we start formulating trades for the Matt Hollidays, Grady Sizemores and Adam Dunns of the world, we have to realize that the lack of promise in the Mets' farm system also cripples their ability to trade for such players.  Here are three options that are more logical:
