Around The League
It looks like the Mariners should have traded Erik Bedard when they had the chance, because yesterday afternoon he landed back on the DL with stiffness in his left shoulder. Bedard has underperformed since the Mariners acquired him, as he has been hobbled by back and shoulder injuries for most of this season, after missing the last month of 2007 with a strained oblique. Seattle also made headlines yesterday by cutting first baseman Richie Sexson, who has struggled for the better part of the last two seasons. Sexson has tremendous power when he makes contact but that is his biggest problem--he is a strikeout machine. Despite Carlos Delgado's recent signs of life I still think it would be nice to add a right handed bat who can split time at first base, but Sexson is not the answer. The Padres seem to be shopping Tony Clark, and I would rather see him in a Mets uniform than Sexson.

Well, if there was ever a reason to just hang up the cleats and call it a season, it happened to the Ms today and last night. After a brilliant performance where he hit the first HR by a Mariners pitcher, and the first grand slam for an AL pitcher since Steve Dunning of Cleveland in 1971 (that was before the DH was introduced).

It’s early to analyze the Bedard trade (though that hasn’t stopped me and others from doing so) but he’s certainly not the savior we all expected him to be. By some accounts, he lacks passion and a strong work ethic, and McLaren said only days ago that he’s simply “a 100-pitch pitcher.” Bavasi sold the farm to bring in Bedard, who obviously isn’t ready to be a #1 for a team that desperately needs him, and so he becomes another hot prospect on the trade market.

Wow.
Snagging Erik Bedard was the highlight of last-year's offseason, and it will be a while before we know the full impact of the deal, but here's how it's shaken out thus far:
Bedard (4-4, 4.14 ERA, 1.35 WHIP) has already been on the DL once, and yesterday John McLaren admitted, "We kind of know Erik's a 100-pitch pitcher. There's no use dwelling on it. It is what it is. He's a 100-pitch pitcher." Not really a ringing endorsement of the durability of his alleged ace.

But things look a little better after last night's dazzling performance by Erik Bedard, however, his first really dominating performance since April 26, when he shut down the Yankees in his first start since coming off the DL. Both of these wins were good news, as it's great to see a guy dominate two franchises like the Sox and Yanks (back when the New Yorkers were still playing good ball, anyway). Maybe it's time for a bit of excitement, the kind you get when you come home from work to find there's actually a message on your machine, and you're hoping it's from that hot babe you called last night, and not another robo-sales call from that carpet cleaning company.

To fix that, they went out and traded for Erik Bedard who could team with Felix Hernandez to be the best front end of a rotation in the entire Major Leagues this season. This is all contingent upon Hernandez taking the next step in his development as a pitcher.
