Boston Celtics

7 October 2010

I really like the direction this team is going but I'm not so sure they can really be a contender in the East this year.  The East has gotten a lot stronger over the last few years and while I think they can make the playoffs I don't really see any chance that they can really beat The Magic, the Heat, the Celtics, of the Bulls.  And I'm skeptical they can even beat teams like the 76ers or the Hawks.

That said, here we go...

1-Boston Celtics; 41-10, 2nd in the Eastern Conference

Yes, I'm completely aware of the fact that the Lakers beat the Celtics, in Boston, without Andrew Bynum last night. Still, I refuse to put all my eggs in one basket. I personally prefer the Lakers to the Celtics, and I was rooting for Los Angeles last night, but I'm reserving my biases for the purpose of this post.

(Note: I've published this post on another blog of mine, here.)

Did you see these two teams yesterday? I don't think I've ever been more impressed by a pair of NBA teams on the same day. The Celtics absolutely dismantled a respectable Dallas Mavericks' team, and the Lakers shamed the once-mighty San Antonio Spurs. Everything was clicking for both the Celtics and Lakers, and yet it's not as if this was a one-time deal.

The Boston Celtics have to tread carefully right now. Their mini skid has become a slide, and they've actually fallen behind the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference standings.

Sure the Men in Green are the defending league champions, but the chinks in their armor may eventually become gaping holes. The Celtics and their fans are getting a little worried, and the players have no one to blame but themselves.

With the MLB playoffs set to begin, there is a subtle difference in the air compared to start of any other postseason. In the NHL, fans can potentially look forward to a great Canadians/Bruins series that is not only exciting, but has a historical kick to it. Likewise basketball fans always have the chance to see if the Suns can finally get past the Spurs and football fans love seeing the rivalry of the Eagles Vs the City of Philadelphia when the Eagles so much as get tackled for a loss.

"It's not a game, it's an arms race" - Kanye West and Fallout Boy belt this hook over and over again on a recent hit with that same title. In that context, Kanye and the Fallout Boy guys are referring to the battle of musical artists not only surviving in a competitive worldwide market, but one with hindrances around every music sharing online ripping program. While that's an issue for another day and another blogsite, it's relevance is crucial when talking about the current state of Major League baseball and the National Basketball Association.

Last night the Boston Celtics won the NBA championship and broke some records in the process. They won by 39 points which is near the record for biggest margin. This is their 17th championship, which makes them the franchise with the most championships.  The Celtics had 18 steals, which is a record for the championship clincher.  Ray Allen had 7 3-pointers, yet another record for a game of this magnitude!  The magic # though, is 3...the big 3 to be exact!

When you're going up against the NBA's best defensive team, something's got to give; but for the Lakers, it's not a foul!  They seem to be in the penalty from the jump and their attitude causes them technicals to boot!

r rolling through it.  In case you are unaware of what I am referring to, on Sunday night, the Boston Celtics hosted Kobe Bryant and the L.A. Lakers in game 1 of the NBA finals.  This rivalry is legendary in and of itself, but here we have two young superstars: Paul Pierce and Kobe Bryant.  Most sports fanatics will say that Kobe is one of the greatest players since Jordan, but in my opinion he is just a spoiled, conceited, talented player whose attitude is bigger than his dunk.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the guy isn’t good, but I just don’t think that we could classify him with Michael Jordan yet.  Paul Pierce on the other hand, is underrated.  This man has been a Celtic for years and just needed the help of Garnett, Allen, and a few others to showcase his talent to get to the finals.  The first game of this series proved this with the Celtics winning at home while the crowd chanted, “Beat L.A.!”

We had Johnny Most as the voice of the Boston Celtics, who never, to my recollection, ever saw a legitimate foul called on a Celtic player. And always, always thought that opponent reactions to fouls were overblown. Yet we loved him (HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!!! HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!!; people were worried that he was headed for cardiac arrest. Man smoked many packs of cigarettes a day, which gave his voice more than just a hint of gravel).
