Argenis Reyes

Castro.  Luis Castillo was projected as the starting second baseman, but now Damion Easley and Argenis Reyes are platooning at the position.  Although Moises Alou wasn't healthy enough to start the season with the Mets, designs were for him to play left field every day.  But now rookies Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans are in a lefty-righty platoon.  And while Ryan Church was unable to play right field, Fernando Tatis impressed Jerry Manuel so much that he has been moved into a platoon now that Church has returned; Tatis got the start on Sunday against the lefty Randy Wolf.

20-day rehab assignment, and could rejoin the Mets as soon as tomorrow, although Damion Easley and Argenis Reyes are putting Castillo's roster spot in serious jeopardy for the time being.

r pitching, and Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis each homered to lead the onslaught.  Jose and Argenis Reyes had two hits apiece, and Carlos Beltran drove in two, as New York scored eight runs in the third inning to put it away early.  Things are looking pretty good for the time being, but the real test will come the next time the Mets have a slim lead late in a game.

; Heilman walked the first batter and the second reached on a misplayed pop-up that fell in between Argenis Reyes and Carlos Beltran.  He recorded an out on a fielder's choice, but then Jody Gerut hit a three-run bomb over the right field fence, and suddenly it was 6-5.  Joe Smith and Scott Schoenweis entered to retire a batter each and save the game, but the victory left a bad taste in any fan's mouth because of the continued struggles of the bullpen, namely Aaron Heilman, in Wagner's stead.

Outside of mid-level prospects, Argenis Reyes and Nick Evans might be enticing trade bait for Bay, Giles or Ibanez.  Reyes has played very well since being called up, and both the Pirates and Padres have openings at second base.  Evans is a fourth or fifth outfielder at this point in his career, but he has decent speed and a lively enough bat that a team might take a chance on him.

ter than Evans, as the pinch hitter.  It ended up working out somewhat, as Evans walked.  Argenis Reyes pinch-hit for Feliciano and bunted Evans to second, where he was stranded.  Presumably Manuel was worried that if Castro singled or walked, then there is no speed on the bases, but I would still take my chances with Castro's ability to hit the ball out of the park.

(who else?) broke the game open with a two-run home run, his 20th of the year, in the fifth.  Argenis Reyes tacked on his first career homer in the seventh, and the Mets trumped the Cards 7-2.  The Phillies lost to Atlanta, so heading into tonight's game the Mets sit atop the NL East by two full games, at 56-47.

umental to the Mets' success in Cincy as anyone getting paid upwards of $12 million per year:  Argenis Reyes and Robinson Cancel.

The feisty Reyes has played excellent defense at second base, and his knack for being right smack in the middle of countless rallies has been impressive.  He provides a solid presence in the number two hole, and if he and Easley keep up their production, we may see a small-scale Wally Pipp/Lou Gherig situation when Luis Castillo returns from injury.  Cancel only has two hits for the Mets this year--and only two since 1999 for that matter--but they could not have come at more opportune times.  His first was a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single to give the Mets the lead in a 4-2 win against the Rangers on June 15, and the second was a pinch-hit double to lead off the tenth inning on Sunday in Cincinnati.

ounger, so they would probably need a similar combination of Evans and Muniz, or possibly infielder Argenis Reyes in return for Ibanez, but I'm not sure that package would be enticing enough for interim GM Lee Pelekoudas.
