Working at Citifield as i do, puts me in a unique situation. I get to see the pulse of the team, and although i am a hospitality attendant, (merchandiser at Majestic team store) i see the team in a different light, or so i think. I look at these Mets and i think Carlos Delgado was a big loss to them. I was a big advocate for the signing of Manny Ramirez, and his violation of the drug policy makes the Wilpon's a genius for staying away, and Minaya a good GM for not pushing the signing. I think Mr. Minaya has done a fine job of putting a team together. Now that i have a closer look at the demographic of people that come to the games, and the guests that spend good money, the Mets are in need of a superstar that can sit up there with Santana. Fans and guests want a player they can relate to, and Daniel Murphy is this type, David Wright is this type, Mike Pelfrey is this type, even K-rod. With that being said, they cant just make this player, they have to use Church and others to make a move. Its hard for the Mets, because they no longer have Lastings Milledge or Carlos Gomez to seduce other teams. The Mets would love to make a deal, how could they not. Their team is all heart right now, that is why when they lose, they are heartbroken or win with resiliency. They rarely blow teams out. They have the 2nd lowest homers in the league behind Pitt and San Fran, its not all about the long ball, but you cant be an expensive team like they are and be so meager in that department. New Yorkers love the big fly, and they are less critical of the team because of all the injuries, but they are getting restless. THe venue is excellent, and if it were not for the field, you might forget that you were at a baseball game. It is that easy going and excellent building to be at for a few hours. Only 3 teams have a higher batting average, and that good, but you need to bring the runs in.They are average in RBI's, the fact is that they need help. But where? Maybe Lyle Overbay, Jim Thome, Nick Johnson. Lance Berkman may be ready for a change of scenery, he plays at a hitter friendly park, and is only batting .241, but he a switch hitter to back up Beltran and before Wright. Outfield might be another area they look at, and leave Murphy and Tatis in a platoon situation at 1st, but staying like this will force the Mets to claim this season with the insuracnce company. Its tough for an organzation to field a new team on the fly, but they have to get it done. They lost a series to the Rays, and are playing the Cardinals. The beat goes on for the Mets, and Beltran is another core player on the DL, this is a crazy season one at Citi, and i look forward to another locker room addition soon enough.. Read my blog!!!! |
